The Requirement

The wheels were to match a city slicking single speed commuter/track bike, the overall look and feel being a key driver. The frame being an Aventon Mataro in brushed aluminium with black finishing kit and cranks. Given the bike will spend a quite lot of time on the road rather than track, having rim brakes as an option was important to be legal and also to ensure you stop easily! Budget for the wheel set was sub £300.

The Solution

The H Plus Son SL42s were chosen in black to match the finishing kit. These rims have a lovely aero section, are robust but light and have a braking surface for rim brakes. A System EX flip flop hub was chosen for the rear, a great sealed bearing hub facilitating a fixed gear set up for track and a free hub for road usage. Silver Sapim Race double butted spokes in a 2X pattern for the rear and laced radially for the front. My recommendation now for this sort of set up and budget would be to use the either the Miche Primato hubs that come in wide or of narrow flange or BLB do some nice own brand hubs that are reasonably priced.
