The majority of our wheels are made using Sapim spokes; they are renowned for supplying a very high quality product. These come in 2 standard colours, silver or black, although structurally their behaviour is the same, the black coating typically adds 70% to the cost. If you want some more exotic colours for your build we have a range from our suppliers, please call to discuss.

For most wheel sets we use double butted spokes (thicker sections on the ends thinner in the middle). By working the metal to create the profile they provide greater resilience and strength than is typically obtained in a plane gauge (same thickness along the length). These are our most commonly used spokes:-

Race

A great all-rounder, tried and tested in many applications. A double butted spoke profile with dimensions 2.0mm x 1.8mm x 2.0mm.

Race is the most popular double butted spoke from Sapim. It is built to tension easily without winding up (twisting of the spoke that can lead to spokes loosening during usage). Race provides a better shock absorption thanks to its thin middle section than non butted spokes.

D Light

A double butted spoke profile with dimensions 2.0mm x 1.65mm x 2.0mm.

These spokes are designed specifically to meet the needs of mountain bike wheels providing:-

  • Maximum strength
  • Minimum weight
  • Disc brake compatibility
  • Suitable for hand wheel building

The short 2mm section of the D-Light reduces weight especially on the threaded side. The 2mm section starts just at the beginning of the thread. Therefore, the rotating masses at the end of the spoke are reduced. This brings benefits to both the acceleration and braking qualities of the wheel. The end sections are 2mm providing strength whilst the middle section thins to 1,65mm, which makes the spoke much stiffer and brings less torsion during truing.

CX Ray

These are the strongest spoke commonly used by wheel builders; they are as light as a titanium spoke and are suitable for many high performance applications. The spokes have an aero elliptical section so the cross sections are 2.0 - (0.9x2.2) - 2.0 mm.

The CX-Ray still receives the best results in fatigue testing of any spoke. Its unique strength and flexibility make the CX-Ray suitable for most bicycle disciplines. The middle section of the spoke is drawn then pressed in a special mold to form its specific profile.  CX-Ray spokes are used by top bike racers and triathletes around the world. Even downhillers use them, recognizing their strength and flexibility. Special alloy treatment and sophisticated production make this possible.  The CX-Ray fits all standard hub holes.

  • The aero design does not require specially designed or modified hub holes to fit the elliptical section.
  • The spoke ends are dimensionally similar to standard round spokes.
  • Longer lasting than any other spokes on the market.
  • Aerodynamic middle sections reduce wind resistance. 
  • Produced from high-tensile, fatigue-resistant 18/8 stainless steel conforming to the Sapim quality standard specifications.

Leader

The Leader is the recommended choice for a day-to-day usage. These are typically used in basic wheel sets as they are lower cost, but still providing a good quality product.

There are 3 commonly used lacing patterns that we offer with our wheel sets, these are 3 cross, 2 cross and radial, these are illustrated above in order left to right. For 3 cross the spoke crosses over twice then under once, for two cross over then under. Radial as the name implies radiate straight out to the rim. The effect of the crossing is to distribute the load and transmit torsion around the wheel. The pattern is chosen depending on the usage. 

Wheels are loaded in 3 ways, by the weight of the bike and rider and the terrain impact, by the driving force applied through rear wheel, and by disc brakes. Rim brakes apply braking force directly to the wheel edge of the wheel so the transmitted torsion is limited to the drive wheel. So for a driving or disc braking wheel the spoke will either pull or push load. As this occurs spokes will stretch or shorten slightly depending if they are being pushed or pulled. The crossing pattern delivers spring effect absorbing the torsion and transmitting the force either to the wheel rim to push the bike forwards or slowing the rider and bike under braking. The so what is that for road bike usage with rim brakes all three spoke combinations could be used, for mountain bikes 3 cross is most often used. 

Radial 

Is often used for road front wheels, though some hub manufacturers will not guarantee their hubs for this configuration due to the high outward pull stresses on the hub, it can be used on the non-drive side for rear wheels, it is not suitable for any disc wheel configurations or any applications where higher stresses are likely to be experienced (e.g cobbles, off road, heavier riders etc). It is less strong than tangential.

Tangential

The spoke leaves the hub at a tangent; the stresses on the hub as a result are in the direction of pull and shared better in the hub material therefore creating a stronger assembly. The crossing of the spokes also has the effect of building in more resilience into the assembly, so a stronger wheel.

2 Cross

Often used for road rim applications where spoke counts are lower and the loadings are low to medium or for smaller rim/larger hub applications (e.g. Brompton rims or Rohloff hubs). 

3 Cross

This is a tried and tested standard that is most often used for both road and mountain bike wheels, it is strong and resilient. It can be used for disc and drive applications.

Spoke Count

Another key consideration is the number of spokes that are used. Rims and hubs come in a wide variety from 16 through to 36+. The application and weight of the rider are key drivers here. If you are 85Kg and you have a set of wheels with 32 holes back and front, then if you reduce the count to 18 you are taking the same stress on half the number of spokes, double the load per spoke, rim and hub hole. When considering your application we will ask questions about the usage to ensure that the set-up is right for you. The most common configuration is 32 hole, it's proven and it works.

Reliable Delivery

Delivery for your wheel set to a UK address is inclusive. For an additional cost we ship to mainland Europe and the rest of the world, however cost will be country dependant.

We carefully package your wheels in our custom designed boxes. We send via signed for courier delivery and we will keep you informed of shipping status.

Customer rebuilds and repairs are charged at £15 for UK delivery. Alternately please call in at the workshop.
